On Super Bowl Sunday, The Unknown Soldiers commended New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees for his 2008 USO visit to boost U.S. troop morale in Iraq. On Easter Sunday, the NFL star again deserves our respect for another selfless act to honor his heroes. Two months after bringing the Vince Lombardi trophy to New Orleans, the Super Bowl MVP is on top of the world. But that doesn't mean Brees is ignoring it, or failing to acknowledge those who give him the freedom to seek glory on the football field. WDSU-TV reports that Brees just wrapped up his third visit to troops overseas, this time in Africa, Turkey and the Persian Gulf. Saints teammate Billy Miller and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Donnie Edwards joined Brees on the trip.
"Every time I go and see the troops they believe so much in the cause and the reason that they're there," Brees told FoxNews.com. "There's just so much unity and solidarity within the military and that's great to see — that inspires you."
Brees told the website that he doesn't think the men and women serving in the U.S. military get enough credit for their extraordinary actions. He said the day millions of Christians honor what they believe is history's ultimate sacrifice is also an appropriate time to remember fellow Americans on the battlefield. I plan to take the star quarterback's advice.
Drew Brees is a famous millionaire at the pinnacle of his career, making his humility and perspective both refreshing and important. Hopefully, fellow celebrities and the media that eagerly covers them will take notice and begin to devote more time to America's true heroes.
