Purple heart recipient dies in Texas hospital after August bomb blast

The Pentagon said Marine Cpl. Xhacob Latorre died on Tuesday after, according to several reports, he lost both legs in Afghanistan's volatile Helmand Province in August.

Latorre, of Waterbury, Connecticut, was married for two years with a young child. He was 21 years old, barely able to drink a beer legally as he fought for freedom in one of the world's most dangerous countries.

This small passage from The Hartford Courant is perhaps the most dramatic glimpse at this brave Marine's ordeal in a Texas military hospital.

"[Latorre's Aunt] said she doesn't know if Xhacob, who was heavily sedated, was aware of the Purple Heart ceremony in his hospital room Monday.

"I hope he did hear," she said.
Local affiliate WTNH filed this report on the Marine's death, which has been posted on YouTube.

Kudos to the local news outlets for telling this important story. Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell also deserves our praise for ordering flags to half-staff in Latorre's honor. It is always refreshing to see patriotism rise above politics.

You tell me: What is the national media covering today that is more important than this story? The health care debate? Maybe. Tiger Woods? No way.
